2023 – Scottish Civic Trust – My Place Awards – Shortlisted
The Rockfield Centre was saved from demolition by its community in 2015, and then the Oban Communities Trust formed to purchase the building. The objective of the project was to repair and conserve the main building for present and future generations, and to establish a plan for future use and management of the entire site. This refurbishment would leave the building with the right environment for potential uses and activities. It would also encourage utilisation by community groups and other cultural and commercial organisations.
Internal alterations to two storey (partial three storey) existing building of the Rockfield Centre involved demolition of a dilapidated 1950’s WC block to the South (side) elevation to make a new accessible entrance and ramp. Following this, a demolition of a 1950’s stair block to the east (rear) elevation created a new stair and lift core. General internal alterations to the interior to created new WCs and new slappings to create linked spaces.
