Project overview

This project was a successful restoration of the once derelict and dangerous 16th century church at Kirkmichael in the Black Isle.

The traditional building stopped being used for worship in the 18th century and had since fallen into significant disrepair. The church and part of the graveyard are listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the building is also Category B listed.

Works included masonry repairs, a new roof construction using as much of the original material as possible and new Caithness stone floors. For the final part of the project we were appointed to work with StudioSP on the interpretation and display element. This involved the creation of steel frames to display medieval ornamental grave memorials, which are of considerable archaeological interest, that were relocated inside the Nave of the building.

Major funding partners included the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland, the Highland Council and the Robertson Trust.
