Lottery funding was obtained for a new build option for Howatshaws Hall, and we worked with Collective Architecture on this new community facility which comprises of a large multi-purpose hall, offices, a kitchen, toilets and an attic plant room.
The building is a single-storey braced steel frame with shallow strip concrete foundations and a ground bearing concrete slab. The steel frame was designed in 3D using SCIA structural analysis software, which helped to optimise the overall steel tonnage and eliminate the need for portal action across the steeply pitched main hall roof.
The building is surrounded by grounds of approximately 500 square metres, sloping up to the north west. We also designed the external hard landscaped areas and underground drainage, where we incorporated permeable paving for the car parking spaces and also a buried attenuation tank to control surface water discharge to the existing nearby sewer in storm events.
