Project overview

The Bracken Hide is a new 400m2 boutique hotel situated on the outskirts of Portree, Isle of Skye which was inspired by a traditional Scottish bothy.

The project involved the construction of a new central hub building to provide restaurant, bar, kitchen and cinema facilities to service 27 accommodation cabins situated across the 52-acre site.

The building is formed from a series of steel, faceted, portal frames with timber roof purlin construction and metal stud infill to the perimeter of the frame. A central double height space is formed from braced steel framing with open faced fireplaces requiring an offset steel frame solution to maintain flue routes. Externally, the building features a bespoke stone clad roof with a concealed steel bracket system used to support the roof finishes over the large areas of glazing on the primary elevation and bronze cladding to the central fins.

Internally, the ground floor level varies across the footprint to introduce a sunken bar and restaurant areas. The internal design also included steel balustrading at level changes, two bespoke steel staircases, first floor mezzanine structures and bespoke rooflight openings.

Narro were also responsible for the civils engineering works on site including foul and surface water discharge solutions, gaining Scottish Water consent to discharge to existing sewer systems, and the design and detailing for a new 51-person car parking area, access road and junction design. The project also involved significant groundworks to reconfigure the existing site levels to accommodate the site to the Hub, car park and cabin locations.

The hotel was completed and opened for business in 2023.
