This project converted the derelict hotel into a 47-bedroom boutique hotel. The work involved extensive refurbishment and a large extension made of a predominantly steel frame and timber kit infill. Facilities now include a bar, restaurant, private cinema, spa, gym, private dining, driving range, courtyard and marquee for events and private lodges.
The front elevation of the existing hotel was carefully refurbished in order to retain original features, contrasting with the more contemporary wings and new buildings. The use of local materials and forms allows the building to fit nicely into the landscape.
The main restaurant roof incorporates a ridge rooflight and feature timber diagonal bracing system, which was carefully detailed at interactions with the main steel frame. The restaurant also has a cantilevered terrace with incredible views over the golf course and Atlantic Ocean.
Part of the project included the installation of a driving range and single-storey private lodges within the grounds of the golf course. The external façade of the lodges contain significant amounts of large curtain wall glazing, which was designed with slender steel mullions in order to withstand the high wind loads. These new buildings have high ceilings and stunning views.
