The Mill project involved inserting a new timber structure within the existing walls, retaining character while introducing modern design elements. Due to the absence of cross walls, the team discreetly added steel portal frames and cross bracing for structural stability. These interventions allowed the creation of floating, offset living spaces at the downslope gable end, adding drama and spatial variety.
Clerestory glazing at the gables and along the upper floor eaves introduces natural light and frames views throughout the interior. Completed in 2014, the Mill featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs during the 2015 RIBA House of the Year awards. It appeared in the series finale and remains available to UK viewers on the Channel 4 website.
