Home / Strathearn Road
The extension was designed by architect Jones Robbins Tobin, with whom Narro has a strong working relationship. The design aimed to sensitively integrate contemporary materials and engineering solutions into the traditional Edinburgh masonry context.
The extension primarily uses a timber frame construction, seamlessly attached to the existing stone structure. The original masonry building required significant modification, including the installation of a large steel lintel to create an open connection between the old and new spaces. A flat roof crowns the extension, incorporating large rooflights that flood the interior with natural light, while a substantial steel-framed opening directly connects the new space to the garden, enhancing the indoor-outdoor flow.
An intricate structural challenge was supporting the existing staircase after removing a load-bearing wall. To address this, the architect introduced a steel frame to ensure the stability of the staircase. The existing building’s age and complexity required extensive exploratory work, especially around the staircase area, leading to on-site design adjustments. This aspect was further complicated by the project’s timing during the COVID-19 pandemic, which added logistical challenges.
The foundation work demanded particular care due to the proximity of an adjacent property. We closely analysed foundation levels and made adjustments to prevent any risk to the surrounding structures. This level of detail was crucial to preserving the integrity of both properties.
The extension’s roof construction followed traditional flat timber methods but featured a distinctive, non-standard corner detail to accommodate full-height glazing. This innovative approach allowed the glazing to extend seamlessly to the roofline, creating the visual effect of continuous glass panels from ground to roof level. The glazing element is one of the most bespoke features of the project.
The design team also considered sustainability in the design, with a green roof included as part of the extension. This not only enhances the building’s environmental credentials but also contributes to the urban landscape by introducing additional greenery.
CTD Joinery brought the project to life, ensuring that the challenging details were executed to the highest standard with their craftsmanship. Despite the hurdles posed by both the pandemic and unforeseen site conditions, the extension at Strathearn Road exemplifies the successful collaboration between the design and construction teams, achieving a harmonious blend of old and new in a dynamic yet respectful manner.
