Spartans Community Foundation

The structure is single-storey and arranged around a sheltered external space. It features a grid of timber fins and panels that define openings, canopies, and the striking roof terrace balustrade. These timber fins posed the most complex engineering challenge. Each fin integrates mesh infill panels, requiring precise detailing to ensure structural integrity and visual consistency. Their dual function—as both architectural feature and safety barrier—demanded close coordination between architects and engineers.

The building’s timber frame supports a flexible internal layout. A large activity space opens onto a covered terrace and play area, with views over the Spartans football pitch. Adjacent to this is a teaching kitchen, which connects via a wide opening and a serving hatch to the outside. Two quiet rooms, a staff base, and ancillary spaces complete the internal arrangement.

The facility’s design responds directly to community feedback. Windows facing the pitch allow sensory-sensitive users to watch games in a calm setting. Stepped plinths at the entrance offer informal seating with views of the five-a-side pitch. Quiet rooms are placed away from busy areas to ensure tranquillity.

Externally, the building uses Spartans’ signature red and blue to highlight key features such as the entrance, roof stair, and art space. These accents reinforce the identity of the Spartans community.

The project began with a 2022 feasibility study, which concluded that a new build would better meet long-term needs. The final design reflects extensive consultation with young people, youth workers, and staff. It delivers a robust, comfortable, and flexible space that supports learning and inclusion.
