The masterplan’s focus was in the area from the historic timber basin near Firhill Stadium following the canal south to Applecross Street location for the Scottish Canals’ Headquarters. The project provided an important role in contributing to the health and wellbeing of the surrounding community.
The project involved significant changes to the landscape and topography, which we modelled in 3D to ensure was accurately designed. We also designed underground drainage, an extensive network of paths and several bridges, including a scissor bridge which was one of the few examples in the United Kingdom.
Narro were appointed by Scottish Canals to deliver design services within this large, underutilised site, a Local Nature Reserve with path and boardwalk network, mountain bike trail, disabled access fishing pegs, re-designed gateway entrances and viewpoints. The Claypits is one of the first inner city nature reserve in Glasgow and will provides for a range of programmes, site-based activities, and community events.
Alongside the architects, Narro undertook a design study for three pedestrian/cycling bridges as part of the wider Claypits project.
The intention of this exercise was to develop the feasibility of preferred design concepts and establish the fundamental design parameters for each in terms of key dimensions, operation, form and structure, appearance and materiality, and cost.
Another key objective of this design exercise was to minimise the physical and visual impact in relation to the canal’s designation as a Scheduled Monument, whilst at the same time providing a series of elegant and contemporary structures, that have a consistent and complementary aesthetic.
