Despite its charm and a stunning garden, the property suffered from a cramped layout and limited natural light. To address these challenges without encroaching upon the mature rear garden, the architects, OCA Studio, focused on maximising the existing footprint through strategic interventions.
A key aspect of the renovation involved the addition of a dormer to the rear roof pitch. This modification rationalised the principal bedroom and introduced a new bathroom within the modest upper-floor space. The dormer’s construction required precise structural calculations to ensure stability and integration with the existing roof structure. The construction team built an internal steel frame to support the new dormer structure and transfer loads to the existing foundations. The interface between the new and existing required careful detailing to minimise impact on the existing structure whilst providing adequate tying and restraint between the two.
The choice of materials played a pivotal role in both the aesthetic and functional outcomes of the project. Zinc cladding was applied to the new extension’s roof and walls, offering durability and a contemporary appearance. This material selection not only provided a modern contrast to the traditional elements of the cottage but also ensured longevity and low maintenance. The zinc cladding seamlessly integrated with the existing structure, demonstrating thoughtful material application.
The design incorporated an intricate metal screen. The designers conceived this feature as a modern response to historical cast ironwork. They adapted garden trellis motifs and laser-cut them into steel panels. This screen not only provided necessary privacy but also added depth and visual interest to the rear façade. The installation of this heavy screen required the use of a large crane to position it over the roof, underscoring the engineering considerations involved.
The careful selection of materials, structural enhancements, and innovative solutions addressed the property’s initial shortcomings while preserving its unique character and garden space.
