Home / Rock Cove

Project overview

Rock Cove is a striking new residential build on the Rosneath Peninsula.

Designed by Cameron Webster Architects, this contemporary home has a dramatic cliffside location, overlooking a serene sea loch.

At the heart of the project is a robust steel frame structure that underpins the home’s stability and modern aesthetic. The ground floor, supported by precast concrete within the steel framework, anchors the house to the uneven rock face. Timber kit in-fill panels and a timber kit roof complement the steel frame, blending strength with natural materials to create a balanced and resilient build.

One of the most striking features of Rock Cove is its overhanging cantilever design, which projects over the sea loch, offering breathtaking views. Achieving this architectural ambition required meticulous engineering, particularly in aligning diagonal columns on the uneven rock surface. The rocky terrain presented significant challenges during construction, necessitating the removal of sections of the cliff to install concrete pad foundations. Surveys provided a starting point, but on-site adjustments were essential to account for the natural variability of the ground.

Challenges

Given its coastal setting, the team carefully selected materials to withstand the harsh marine environment. High-grade galvanised steel was specified to resist saltwater corrosion, while protective measures were used to safeguard the exposed concrete beneath the floors.

The site’s remote location added further complexity, with limited access for heavy machinery. The team carefully planned material deliveries to avoid overburdening the access routes, relying heavily on manual handling for much of the construction. They used cranes only when necessary, prioritising minimal crane usage to overcome logistical constraints.

The collaborative efforts of the project team, including contractor Q Build and programme managers Armour Construction Consultants ensured that despite the challenging terrain and logistical hurdles, Rock Cove emerged as a testament to innovative engineering and architectural excellence.

Rock Cove is a stunning home, seamlessly integrating into its natural surroundings while showcasing the strength of modern construction techniques.
