Nestled in the scenic heart of Perthshire, this project involved a meticulous transformation of an existing family villa. It blended innovative engineering with architectural finesse to create a stunning, contemporary living space.
The works began with substantial internal alterations to the original property, requiring the removal of several internal walls to reconfigure the layout into an open-plan design. The crowning feature of the project is a new curved extension, incorporating expansive glazing to maximise natural light and frame views of the surrounding grounds. This extension transitions into a wraparound terrace, creating a harmonious flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Complementing the main house are newly constructed outbuildings, including a timber-framed garage and a courtyard building, as well as the restoration of a historic walled garden. This garden now features a bespoke glasshouse and two timber shed buildings.
The engineering challenges of the project were significant. The proximity of mature trees to the proposed outbuilding locations required careful consideration of the site’s existing ground conditions. Traditional ground screw foundations were unsuitable due to the bearing strata, leading to the adoption of a concrete piled solution.
The team used steel extensively in the extension to create large openings in the original masonry, supporting the modern design while maintaining the property’s structural integrity. Timber kits formed the basis for the outbuildings, balancing sustainability with aesthetic appeal.
This project was a collaborative effort between Lorn Macneal Architects, AGB Scotland, and our engineering team. The result is a revitalised family home that respects its historical roots while embracing contemporary living, setting a benchmark for architectural and engineering excellence.
