The primary objective was to create a spacious, open-plan kitchen that maximised the sea view, requiring significant structural engineering interventions.
A key challenge was the creation of a large, glazed opening in the rear elevation. To achieve this, a discrete steel frame was introduced to support the structural loads while maintaining an unobtrusive aesthetic. This ensured stability without compromising the visual openness of the design. The extension was completed with a timber flat roof structure, integrating bespoke timber cladding to complement the coastal setting.
Beyond the extension, modifications were made to the existing structure to facilitate an attic conversion. Localised strengthening of both the floor and roof was necessary to accommodate the additional loads imposed by the new habitable space. This included reinforcing the timber joists and integrating new structural elements to support the weight of the dormer and rooflights. A new access stair was also installed, requiring careful consideration of load distribution and connections to the existing framework.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful structural engineering solutions can enable ambitious architectural designs. The combination of steel framing, timber construction, and structural reinforcements ensured the safe and functional transformation of the home while enhancing its visual and spatial qualities.
