Project overview

The regeneration of the Prestonpans War Memorial showcases thoughtful civil engineering.

Working with landscape architects rankinfraser, Narro played a pivotal role in transforming this area on behalf of East Lothian Council. Key aims were to enhance accessibility and create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

The Prestonpans Civic Square, which pays tribute to those from the local area who have lost their lives in conflicts. It is set within a square that was originally the site of an old building. The space’s prior state included deteriorating stonework, outdated features, and a neglected shelter that was unfortunately often misused. Additionally, the site offered no opportunity to appreciate the stunning views of the Firth of Forth and Fife beyond.

Phase 1

In the project’s first phase, the focus centred on the upper square. The initial steps involved the removal of the misused shelter and addressing substantial stonework degradation caused by improper cement pointing. This cement had significantly contributed to the stone’s deterioration. The walls were repointed with appropriate materials, a new coping stone was installed, and the entire square was. During excavation, the team discovered asbestos from the site’s prior use. This required a thorough removal process to ensure safe and compliant working conditions.

One of the most striking interventions was creating openings in the rear wall of the square. These carefully designed apertures frame the breathtaking sea views, with one opening featuring a Juliet balcony to provide an elevated vantage point. This design choice not only restored the site’s connection to its natural surroundings but also added an experiential dimension for visitors.

Phase Two

Phase two addresses the lack of accessibility between the upper square and the lower area, which forms part of the iconic coast-to-coast John Muir Way. The original setup relied on steps, rendering the route inaccessible for wheelchair users. To resolve this, the team has designed and constructed a new ramp system, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetic considerations. The ramps, finished in stone to harmonise with the existing materials, enable inclusive access while enhancing the overall appeal of the space.

Beyond improving accessibility, this phase revitalises the lower area through repaving, additional tree planting, and the installation of park benches. This will provide a more inviting and usable space. The team resolved drainage issues, including ponding and a leaking Scottish Water line, ensuring the area remains functional and pleasant in all weather conditions.

The rejuvenated Prestonpans Civic Square will serve as a vibrant focal point for community activities such as fairs and fetes, reflecting the Council’s vision to elevate the area’s profile. The project demonstrates how investment in thoughtful design and engineering can not only preserve but enhance a site’s historical and cultural significance. By improving access, addressing structural and environmental issues, and creating visually compelling spaces, the team has helped to establish a landmark that honours the past while serving the present community.
