Our engineering team supported the project from concept to construction, delivering structural solutions that respected both the architectural vision and the constraints of the existing building fabric.
The works comprised a rear extension, attic alterations, and selective internal downtakings. A key design driver was the retention and protection of a distinctive rear window, which held both planning value and architectural merit. To safeguard this feature, the extension was designed and engineered to sit below the window line. This required careful consideration of floor levels and load paths to avoid compromising the historic opening.
Materially, the project combined timber framing, selective use of steel elements, high‑quality glazing, and areas of stone and rendered finishes that tied the new works into the existing property. A large rooflight positioned between the kitchen and living room became a defining feature of the extension, bringing natural light deep into the plan. The attic works included the formation of a new dormer, demanding precise integration with the existing roof structure.
One of the principal engineering challenges stemmed from the need to lower the extension relative to the main house. This meant excavating below the level of the existing foundations. To manage this safely, we designed side‑pinning works to support the existing structure, allowing excavation in controlled stages without undermining stability.
The result is a well‑crafted, contemporary addition that enhances the home while remaining sympathetic to its Edinburgh context.
