Saltire Housing Design Awards: Saltire Medal – Winner
The project team created the new space at North Gardner Street within a confined urban setting, tucked into the backcourts of a Glasgow tenement block.
On the ground floor, the open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area open directly onto a private walled garden through patio doors. High-level glazing along the southern boundary, a rooflight on the eastern edge, and a glazed first-floor landing allow natural light to flood the space.
Upstairs, four bedrooms and a family bathroom surround a double-height hall topped by a large rooflight. As part of the extension, the first floor now cantilevers outward to prevent direct views into the living space from neighbouring tenements.
Overall, the transformation of North Gardner Street turned a dark, damp structure into a bright, contemporary home.
