RIAS 2024 Winner
Home / Kinning Park Complex
Kinning Park Complex was developed from an existing community centre. The centre provided local residents with a community gathering space and learning hub. The sports hall hosted community meals and workshops. The classrooms on the top floor provided studio space for resident artists and charitable organisations.
In 2018, the redevelopment project aimed to create a unique multi-use community space. The variety of activities it offers makes it stand out. Working with a multi-disciplinary team, the proposals focused on redeveloping and refurbishing the building’s structure. The goal was to create a functional multi-use facility and creative workspace across all three storeys.
A new lift shaft was installed requiring internal floor and wall layouts to be altered to allow access throughout. We installed a new mezzanine floor to provide office space within a double-height area of the building and improved the external fabric by upgrading the windows, doors, and stonework.
When modifying areas of the historic building structurally, we used existing structural members whenever possible to avoid introducing new materials. Instead of replacing the damaged structural elements unsuitable for a building of this type, we employed sensitive repair and restoration techniques whenever feasible.
Since opening, Kinning Park Complex has become a vibrant community hub, providing vital services and a focal point for the local area. In 2024, the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland named the project as won of it’s winners.
