Project overview

The Kelpies Experience is an innovative aerial assault course, ingeniously integrated into one of the iconic Kelpie structures.

Commissioned by Scottish Canals and designed by Zone Events, this project highlights precision engineering and creative problem-solving. The collaborative effort ensured the preservation of the structure’s integrity while delivering an exhilarating attraction.

Zone Events initially proposed the ambitious scheme, which included installing rope bridges and specialist platforms within the Kelpie framework. The Narro team were then tasked with evaluating these designs to ensure the structural safety and compatibility of the proposed elements with the existing Kelpie structure. This entailed detailed calculations to determine the loads imparted by the rope bridges and platforms. Recommendations were provided regarding the appropriate size of tension wire ropes, the type of fixings required, and the precise locations for their attachment.

Steel was the primary material utilised for the project, chosen for its strength and durability. The team used specialist systems, commonly employed in bridge and oil rig inspections, to design the wire ropes and platforms, ensuring their robustness and suitability for high-stress environments. A specialist company designed the platforms, with Narro meticulously determining the optimal suspension points to maintain the structure’s stability.

One of the most significant challenges of the project was the limited access to the Kelpie structure. Due to safety constraints, direct inspection was not feasible. The team relied on the original design plans of the Kelpies, combined with photographs and videos provided by Zone Events, to conduct a thorough desk-based analysis. This approach required innovative thinking and precise interpretation of the data, underscoring the adaptability and expertise of the Narro engineers.

Summary

The integration of the aerial assault course into the Kelpies highlights the seamless blend of artistic vision and engineering prowess. By preserving the iconic design while introducing an interactive experience, the project not only enhances the attraction but also demonstrates the vital role of engineering in bridging creativity and practicality. The Kelpies Experience is available for booking now by teams looking for a new challenge for their charity fundraising efforts!
