Home / Ice House
The project focused on converting a long-abandoned ice house. This building once stored ice for local fishing industries. The goal was to create a functional space while preserving its original architectural integrity. The architect added two small extensions to improve functionality and space, all while maintaining the building’s historic charm.
One of the key engineering challenges was the site’s remote location, nestled at the base of cliffs and directly exposed to the coastline. Access to the site for construction proved to be difficult, requiring careful logistical planning and innovative solutions to transport materials and equipment. The sometimes harsh coastal environment presented another major challenge, with constant exposure to tidal forces necessitating flood defences. To protect the structure, rock armour was installed at the front of the building, reinforcing the foundations and preventing further coastal erosion.
A key focus of the Ice House renovation was sustainability, particularly the reuse of materials. Where possible, existing materials were preserved and incorporated into the design. The project team carefully integrated new materials, such as timber and steel, to complement the original construction, creating a seamless blend of old and new.
