Project overview

The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) is one of Scotland’s most visited cultural venues and a Category A-listed landmark in the heart of Glasgow.

Originally built in 1778 and redesigned by David Hamilton in the 1820s, the building required urgent high-level stonework conservation to safeguard public safety and protect its historic fabric.

Engineering Challenges

Surveys revealed significant stone decay across the cornice and Corinthian capitals, with moisture trapped by failed asphalt coverings accelerating deterioration. Many of the ornate stone rosettes below the cornice had fractured or detached, and the Corinthian capitals decorative leaves and scrolls friable and failing, creating a major hazard. The challenge was to stabilise these delicate elements sensitively, combining public safety with conservation best practice.

Conservation Approach

Working with John Gilbert Architects, the design team developed a strategy of minimal but effective intervention. Each rosette was assessed and those sound enough were pinned with stainless steel dowels, while those that had already failed were replicated and reinstated. The Corinthian capitals were similarly stabilised by discreet stainless steel T-pins securing friable leaves and scrolls. Asphalt coverings were replaced with traditional leadwork to halt water ingress and extend durability.

Impact

Over 200 rosettes and multiple capitals were secured, allowing 84% of the high-level netting to be removed and restoring the legibility of the building’s classical detailing with only netting remaining on the capitals that are in a delicate condition. The works have safeguarded one of Glasgow’s cultural assets for future generations.
