Home / Glenwood
Designed by David Blaikie Architects, the project involved adding a modern extension to a historically significant villa by renowned architect Sir Basil Spence.
The new extension provided the home with a large and functional open plan area, creating a contemporary space that respected the original design language.
A key structural challenge was the treatment of the existing chimney. As part of the original Basil Spence design, the chimney was a listed feature and had to be retained. However, the clients no longer wanted it to be visible at ground floor level. To achieve this, we inserted steel beams to support the chimney above, allowing for the removal of the ground floor walls beneath. This intervention preserved the chimney’s integrity while opening up the lower level.
The extension also involved creating a large structural opening through the original rear wall of the house. This enabled a seamless connection between the new and existing spaces. The structural frame comprises steel beams and slender external columns, designed to maximise internal space and minimise visual impact.
To meet the client’s aesthetic goals, the extension includes curved structural elements that reflect the desired architectural profile. Timber cladding was also applied externally, providing warmth and continuity with the surrounding context.
Internally, the new layout now includes two kitchens and a bespoke circular pantry, positioned between them. Extensive glazing and multiple rooflights fill the interior with natural light throughout the day.
