Project overview

The Fruitmarket Gallery is located on Market Street on the edge of the Old Town in the centre of Edinburgh.

The building has undergone several renovations in its history. Consequently, the project aimed to merge the existing gallery spaces with the adjoining warehouse and former nightclub into a single venue. This involved renovating current gallery facilities, adding new gallery spaces, creating a learning/education suite, and relocating the administrative and workshop areas.

Refurbishment of the existing venue and extension into the neighbouring, category B listed, warehouse building was carried out by a multidisciplinary, architect led, team. While the Fruitmarket Gallery itself is not listed, the substructure and adjacent property is Cat A listed and forms part of the Waverly Station complex.

The renovation included stripping out and rationalising the structure to provide a blank canvas. Subsequently, brick piers and a large iron truss above Waverly Station support the stone masonry exterior and steel frame interior.

Narro’s approach involved a thorough initial investigation to fully understand the building structure and minimise project risks. Consequently, they conducted a detailed analysis of the existing structure to streamline the structural intervention. Additionally, Narro collaborated with the Architect, Client, and Exhibition Coordinator to determine maximum loadings for specific areas, allowing a more focused design. Their aim was to renovate economically by retaining as much of the existing structure as possible and minimising the need for new materials.

The project aimed to preserve much of the existing building’s details while updating the facilities to meet current Building Standards. This included improved access and environmental control to maintain and enhance the Fruitmarket Gallery’s status as an international arts centre.

The refurbishment expanded the café/shop area, added a larger kitchen, and included accessible toilet facilities. As a result, the Fruitmarket can now host workshops, conferences, and events.
