Douglas Hotel

The scheme involved retaining and refurbishing the main 19th century buildings to the front of the hotel and the redevelopment of the existing accommodation to provide a new entrance foyer and lounge along with a new spa and bedroom block.

The work required in restoring this derelict building to its former glory included:

Lowering of the existing ground floor to create a new habitable basement.
Partial demolition of areas of the existing building deemed too precarious to restore.
The strengthening and reconfiguration of the existing floor layouts and attic space.
Substantial structural alterations internally and externally to create increased circulation space and open up all parts of the hotel.
The construction of a new modern extension to the rear of the property which interfaces with the existing 19th century building.
Within the former ‘doctor’s house’, a further five new rooms were created. This 17th century structure has been meticulously restored using existing stone to retain the external appearance.
