Home / Cuthill Towers Steading
The use of a ‘brown field’ site such as this site involved careful environmental assessment due to the likelihood of old fuel tanks and pits as well as outdated or blocked drainage.
The many structural issues regarding the reuse of old buildings required careful inspection of the existing fabric and an assessment of the impact of new interventions. In both cases, the differing needs of housing over farming use meant that areas of wall had to be underpinned and in some cases totally rebuilt. By careful choice of new structure it was possible to keep a palette of traditional materials whilst adopting new materials and techniques where appropriate.
