Project overview

Craigend Resource Centre is a pivotal hub for the local community in Greenock East, and was designed to offer a range of social, recreational, educational, and health services to its residents.

This project faced numerous challenges, including timeline challenges and site access, which made project management critical. The site is located next to a main railway line and a large burn. This necessitated close coordination with ScotRail to ensure safe site access and minimise any potential risks. Given the site’s tight constraints, particularly with the use of cranes, there was a concern that any mishap could affect the nearby railway. Therefore, Narro acted as an independent checker to coordinate approvals for crane usage and other related activities.

The new structure was a complete rebuild, replacing the old, inadequate building that suffered from a leaking roof, inefficient heating, and insufficient space for community needs. The newly constructed centre includes a full-sized community hall and event space. It also features a community laundrette, a communal computer room, fully accessible toilets and changing rooms, as well as multiple smaller meeting rooms. Additional amenities include a café and a play and sensory space for children.

Materials Used

The team carefully selected the materials used in the project to address the engineering challenges. The building was constructed with a steel framework, concrete piles, and suspended slab ground beam arrays. The main structural elements were timber infill while the exterior was clad in a grey and black finish, with additional accents to enhance the aesthetic appeal.

One of the key engineering objectives was to make the structure as light and efficient as possible, considering both the support conditions and the tight site constraints. Careful planning was required for the installation of various components due to the restricted space. The limitations imposed by crane operations near the railway made this planning even more crucial.
