Cambo Estate Stables

Cambo Estates Stables, a B-listed late 18th-century structure, underwent a careful restoration to address severe structural damage. Before intervention, roofs had partially collapsed, leaving the building exposed to the elements. The engineering approach focused on minimal intervention while ensuring stability.

The team worked to preserve original features, especially the horse stalls, and integrate them into the final design. Conservation techniques reinforced weakened components using traditional materials and methods to maintain authenticity.

A new stairway, designed to appear detached from the historic structure, provides access to the former ‘Villa Parka.’ Hidden supports create a floating effect while ensuring full load-bearing functionality. Precise calculations prevent undue stress on the existing fabric.

Restoration techniques stabilised damaged areas with selective timber and masonry repairs. Narro used reversible structural interventions and improved weatherproofing to enhance durability. The project balanced preservation with modern engineering principles.

Now serving as the estate’s visitor hub, the restored stables house a café, shop, exhibition space, and teaching rooms. The Cambo Estate Stables project successfully blends heritage conservation with innovative structural engineering, securing the building’s future while honouring its history.
