Black Bull Close

The existing building featured traditional random rubble stone masonry walls, approximately 600mm thick. Before redevelopment, the building was in a deteriorated state, lacking both a first floor and a roof.

Working closely with the project team, Narro provided structural design expertise to support both repair works and new build elements. Our design ensured the integrity of the original structure while enabling its adaptation for the proposed development.

A key part of the project was the addition of a single-storey timber extension. This new structure incorporated a series of intermediate trusses spaced at 600mm intervals, supported by a ridge beam spanning between main trusses set at 1.8m centres. The main trusses were reinforced using an Ancon tie bar system. At eaves level, the trusses were supported by a series of timber columns.

The completed facility in Black Bull Close now serves as a hub for The Ridge Foundation, enabling them to continue their vital work in the community. The site includes meeting rooms, communal spaces, and a kitchen training area—offering support and skills development opportunities for people in Dunbar. The Ridge Foundation offer Modern Apprenticeships in traditional stonemasonry and joinery, which was utilised during the construction phase of the project.
