Project overview

Creating a safe and secure space for children.

The Bairns Hoose project, commissioned by Children 1st and designed by Lee Boyd Architects, involved converting a former bungalow-style house into a secure and soundproof environment for children involved in court proceedings. The aim was to create a space where remote hearings and interviews could take place with complete privacy and comfort. Inspired by the Icelandic Barnahus model, this project is part of Scotland’s first Child’s House for Healing.

A key structural engineering challenge was achieving the necessary soundproofing to ensure sensitive conversations could occur without risk of being overheard. The project required extensive retrofitting of the existing structure to meet strict acoustic standards, particularly in rooms designated for court hearings and interviews.

To address these challenges, specialised soundproofing materials were used, including acoustic insulation, panels, and barriers. The structural modifications included reinforcing walls, ceilings, and floors to reduce sound transmission. Despite the extensive retrofitting, the design remained focused on creating a welcoming environment for the children, with soft furnishings and warm lighting complementing the soundproofing efforts.

Working within a strict budget, the team had to balance cost-effectiveness with the need for high-quality soundproofing. This required careful planning and the selection of materials that met both budgetary constraints and the project’s stringent requirements.

The Bairns Hoose project successfully combined structural engineering with sensitive design to create a secure, soundproof space for children involved in court proceedings. The project exemplifies how thoughtful engineering can meet complex needs while maintaining a supportive environment for vulnerable users.
