Home / Aldourie Estate – Biomass Energy Building

Project overview

The Aldourie Biomass Energy Building burns wood pellets from a local source and powers a district heating system across the estate.

By replacing an earlier system, the new building saves an estimated 48 tonnes of CO2 saved per annum. Construction and materials reflect the local Highlands vernacular, by making use of local rubble stone, corrugated iron, larch boards, and tree trunks cut from the surrounding woodland – in some cases within metres of the building.

The new structure sits close to other working buildings including the restored home farm and sawmill and appears as a picturesque building in the landscape. The design of the Biomass Building compliments the restoration of a Victorian-era sawmill.
